August 16 - 21, 2024
On Friday, August 16 we arrived at Dayton RV Park in Dayton, NV for 8 nights. It's full hookups for $57.24 per night with Good Sam discount. It's a nice park and just what we needed to visit John's brother, Bill, for a few days. There seem to be more seasonal rigs here than transient, but they're all very nicely cared for.
On Sunday we went to church with Bill and then home for lunch and visiting. On Monday we drove up to Reno to have lunch at Maria's Mexican Restaurant in Verdi, NV and visit with John's step-sister, Trina, and her husband, Paul, and John's step-brother's wife, Bridget. We got to see Bridget's beautiful new-to-her home too. It was a really great time and the food was good too!

Me talking, Bridget, Trina, Paul and Bill
Bridget and Bill from Bridget's backyard. What a beautiful view of the mountains she gets to look at every day!
Tuesday we went around Lake Tahoe. Here are some pictures from the Nevada (east) side of the lake (John forgot his glasses/sunglasses so that's why he's making a face).
The color of the water is so beautiful!
We took a little detour north and went to Donnor Memorial State Park near Truckee, NV. You may have heard the story about the Donnor Party on the Oregon Trail, and the Hastings Cutoff that was supposed to save over 300 miles but was actually 125 miles longer. Unfortunately, it didn't work out well and they were trapped at what is now called Donnor Pass in the winter of 1846-47. It's interesting reading if you want to go to https://www.britannica.com/topic/Donner-party . Here are some pictures from the Donnor Memorial State Park Museum, which also explain the story.
In 1918 they erected this monument, near the Breen cabin site. The top of the base of the monument is at 22 feet, the height of the snow that winter.
This rock was the north face and fireplace of the Murphy cabin.
When they were able to get back to the pass, the Army came and buried under the middle of the cabin the remains of the ones who died on the pass. Then they burned down the cabin. The two columns on the left are those who perished, and the two on the right are the survivors.
We went back down to the lake and found a beautiful park to have our picnic lunch, then made our way around the lake on the California (west) side. We haven't been in the area for decades, and the area had really built up. I think you have to have a lot of $$$ to live in that area!
Here are some more pictures of the lake from the Nevada side. God's creation is so beautiful!

We're getting better at taking selfies!
Today is a 'rest' day, but John has started cleaning the 5th wheel in preparation for us to be...
roving on...
